LIFE Greenadapt project - Visit to treatment wetlands pilot site in Galicia

The experts from the UNESCO Chair on Sustainability (UPC) in Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) visited (December 14th to 16th, 2023) the pilot wetland treatment of the LIFE Greenadapt project in As Somozas (Galicia).

The pilot facility of the LIFE Greenadapt project at the Xiloga facilities in As Somozas (Galicia) features an innovative wetland treatment system, consisting of 4 aerated wetlands and 4 electroactive systems.

Applied microbiology experts from the UNESCO Chair on Sustainability at the UPC are responsible for conducting microbiological sampling to monitor microbial communities and evaluate the efficiency of these treatments.

The monitoring of the treatment wetlands will employ techniques of molecular microbiological sampling of the biofilm formed on the gravel beds, through assays of Bacterial Metagenomics (using Illumina Miseq technology) of the 16S rRNA gene, used as a molecular marker for total bacteria. Additionally, some of the biofilm samples will characterize microbial and functional diversity through shotgun metagenomic sequencing.

During the visit, the UNESCO Chair on Sustainability team provided the necessary basic training to establish the microbiological sampling of the biofilm in the treatment wetlands.
