The UNESCO Chair of Sustainability (UNESCOSOST) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the Intergovernmental Hydrological Program of UNESCO, in the Montevideo Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (PHI-LAC) and its Water Education and Cultures Working Group in Latin America and the Caribbean (GT ECA-LAC), in collaboration with the RECNET, NATURA network, and the CYTED Network on Water Sowing and Harvesting, to publicize, promote and revalue ancestral hydrotechnologies. The call identifies opportunities to rescue cultural heritage and apply it in the region. Therefore, it will be possible to face climate, health and food emergency scenarios.

BACKGROUND. Our existence as human beings, as well as the biological diversity of the planet, are closely linked to the water resource. For human beings, it not only represents a basic need for survival, but rather it can be considered a key factor in the development of humanity in its different geographical and climatic contexts. The rich cultural diversity of the world can be related to the different realities of access to water. This reality has been highlighted, even more, in the context of the health emergency due to COVID-19 that we are experiencing, since access to water and an adequate and safe sanitation system are the basis of hygiene for prevention.
Throughout history, in the diversity of cultural responses to water, we can find ancestral practices based on adaptation. However, there are forgotten paths that contribute to the current knowledge and use of these hydrotechnologies.
CALLING ORGANIZATIONS: The UNESCO Chair of Sustainability (UNESCOSOST) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the Intergovernmental Hydrological Program of UNESCO, in the Montevideo Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (PHI-LAC) and its Water Education and Cultures Working Group in Latin America and the Caribbean (GT ECA-LAC), in collaboration with the RECNET and NATURA network.
We invite you to present experiences and case studies of ancestral hydrotechnologies from Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as international cases, which allow the rescue and dissemination of pilot examples of nature-based solutions.
The projects that are submitted to the call are allowed to be in the application phase or have a potential of use to provide a solution to current climate, health and food emergency issues with special attention to ecohydrology and the ecosystem services that they provide.

BASES OF THE CALL. To prepare your case study and participate in this call, the organizers invite all interested public to enter the information through the following form.
Proposals will be evaluated and selected based on criteria of technical relevance, geographical representativeness and level of impact of hydrotechnology in one of these areas (climatic, health and food) as well as its ecosystem value.
The selected proposals can be presented at the online conference on "Ancestral hydrotechnologies in response to the climatic, health and food emergency" that will take place on March 11, 2021. The conference is aimed at academics, professionals and NGOs as well as actors who are carrying out actions in this area in the region.
During the conference, a synthesis of the works and conclusions of this conference will be presented at the open online seminar on this same topic that will take place on March 18, 2021. The conclusions and orientations of the seminar will contribute to the development of a collaborative program of education and specific training in these technologies and of a project to enhance and preserve several pilot cases in the region.
